Teach For Malaysia Week (#TFMweek) returns for the fifth time. This year, public figures and industry leaders got the chance to work together with educators to help empower students in Johor.

From 6 to 10 August, more than 35 participants excitedly co-taught lessons with 32 Teach For Malaysia (TFM) Fellows in 21 schools in Johor. Participants include – YBhg. Tan Sri Dr. Khair Mohamed Yusof (Ketua Pengarah Pelajaran Malaysia, KPM), Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid Omar (Group Chairman, Permodalan Nasional Berhad), YBhg. Datuk Ismail Ibrahim (Chief Executive, Iskandar Regional Development Authority), YBrs. Dr. Habibah Abdul Rahim, Pengarah (EPRD, Educational Planning & Research Division), Datuk Dr. Aminuddin bin Hassim (Director, National Strategy Unit, Ministry of Finance), YBhg. Datuk Allauddin Anuar  (EPU, Timbalan Ketua Pengarah Sektoral), Wing K. Lee (CEO, YTL Communications), Datuk Hisham Hamdan (Executive Director, Investments, Head of Khazanah Research & Investment Strategy), YBhg Tan Sri Zarinah Anwar (Trustee, Yayasan Hasanah), Yuni Lee Heathcote (Country Director, Telstra Malaysia), and public figure, Hannah Tan.

In previous years, #TFMweek participants like Lisa Surihani, Hans Isaac, Puan Sri Tiara Jacquelina, Harith Iskander, Dato’ Jimmy Choo, Marina Mahathir, Dato’ Johan Jaafar and Datuk Seri Idris Jala taught alongside TFM Fellows for a day. Their #TFMweek experience helped them gain a better understanding of Malaysia’s education landscape and empowered them to continue championing education in their own ways.

Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid Omar, Group Chairman of Permodalan Nasional Berhad, shared the importance of collaboration between public and private stakeholders and the role corporations can play in ending education inequity. “Teach For Malaysia is a very good initiative that needs to be supported. And obviously with any other initiative, you find it’s always challenging to make it sustainable. I think the only way to make it sustainable is to get the support from everyone – the public and the private sector. It doesn’t matter if you are in the education sector or otherwise, we need to ensure a good education quality for our country, one that can translate into better human capital in the future.”

When asked to share his thoughts on the role education plays in building a nation, Wing K. Lee, CEO of YTL Communications, said, “Education is the single most important investment we can make to prepare for a better future. We are at a historic crossroad where technology is advancing faster than what a conventional education system can keep up. Thus, myself and my colleagues at YTL strongly believe in the criticality to help our kids develop a life-long learning culture so they can stay ever-green and engage as productive members of our society and the world.”

Aishah Baith, 2017 Teach For Malaysia Fellow shared what it was like to co-teach a lesson with Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid Omar, Group Chairman of Permodalan Nasional Berhad. “I am blessed with the opportunity to have Tan Sri Wahid Omar share his success story with my students. He is the perfect person to share and motivate them to dream bigger. They now seem more enthusiastic and more responsible for their own learning.”

Over 1000 students had the chance to meet and learn from industry leaders and public figures during #TFMweek 2017.

Teach For Malaysia was named Best Graduate Programme at the GradMalaysia Graduate Recruitment Awards 2015, and has grown to a movement of almost 300 Fellows and Alumni, impacting more than 73,000 students in over 100 schools across 9 states in Malaysia. You can support the mission to end education inequity in Malaysia by donating RM 50 monthly at Your contribution will enable Teach For Malaysia to continue its work to recruit, train and support our country’s rising generation of leaders.
