Who is Teach For Malaysia?

Teach For Malaysia is an independent, not-for-profit organisation on a mission to give all children in Malaysia the opportunity to attain a quality education.

We are mobilising a movement of leaders to empower our nation through education; working together towards a Malaysia where all children are empowered to be leaders of their own learning, their future, and the future of our nation.

What is Teach For Malaysia trying to solve?

We believe that the power of education can unlock the potential of every child. A child’s background and systemic injustices often determines his or her outcome in life. Children in less privileged communities do not have the same access to education opportunities. This is neither right, nor fair.

Malaysian students are far behind. While Malaysia has achieved tremendous progress in socio-economic development over the last 60 years, the Malaysian Education Blueprint calls out that the average 15-year old in Malaysia is academically 3 years behind their peers in Singapore and 4 years behind their peers in Shanghai! This is a precursor for our economic growth, social stability and overall development as a nation.

What does Teach For Malaysia do to solve the Problem?

Teach for Malaysia’s mission is to address education inequity by empowering students to be leaders of their own learning, their future, and the future of our nation. To achieve this, we strive to build a movement of leaders to have immediate and long-term impact on high-need communities across Malaysia through:

  • Our Leadership Development Programme: We recruit outstanding fresh graduates and young professionals to teach in full-time, fully-paid positions for 2 years in high-need public schools across Malaysia.
  • Our Alumni Network: We work alongside our Alumni network to build an ecosystem of solutions at all levels of society.
  • TFM seeks to accelerate the development of the next generation of leaders within the Ministry of Education through leadership development programmes, targeting the development and upskilling of in-service teachers.
  • TFM seeks to mobilise, grow and continuously engage an inclusive movement of leaders across all layers of the education ecosystem to collectively scale impact.

What happens after the 2 years Fellowship?

Teach For Malaysia Fellows have diverse career pathways to choose from such as to continue as public school teachers, join the broader education ecosystem (e.g. non-profit organisations, social enterprises, private education institutions) or enter into the private sectors. Most importantly, our Fellows become a collective Alumni movement working across all layers of society in advocating for systemic change in the education system.

Are the Fellows part-time teachers/volunteers?

Teach for Malaysia currently has 2 pathways for our Fellows:

  1. Full time teachers employed under the Ministry of Education
  2. Teaching Partners who serve to support host teachers under TFM’s employment

Both of these pathways place our Fellows in high-need schools for a minimum of 2 years, where they will continuously receive training and coaching to enhance their leadership skills.

How is Teach For Malaysia Fellowship Programme funded?

Teach For Malaysia Fellowship Programme is funded through the Ministry of Education, corporations and foundations, and individual donors.

Why are you seeking public funding if you are funded by government and private sectors?

In line with our mission to place more Fellows in the country’s high-need schools and more challenging economic environment that has affected our current funding sources, Teach For Malaysia has decided to diversify our funding sources for greater sustainability.

Where do the funds go?

75% of funds raised will be channelled to run our Fellowship Programme. Remaining 25% goes to fundraising and operational costs.

What impact has TFM made so far?

As of 2022, Teach For Malaysia has placed and supported 474 Fellows in 674 schools across Malaysia impacting over 274,600 students.
