#TFMweek students (2)#TFMweek students (2)

It was great to see leaders and public figures from various industries collaborating with our Teach For Malaysia Fellows to empower students across Malaysia by co-teaching lessons for a day during #TFMweek 2016. This year, we impacted a total of 490 students across 5 states via 24 influential individuals!

Between 22 August and 8 September 2016, more than 16 participants excitedly co-taught lessons with 23 Teach For Malaysia (TFM) Fellows in 20 schools across Miri, Perak, Kedah, Penang and Johor. Participants include – Datuk Fatimah Abdullah (Sarawak Minister of Welfare, Women and Community Wellbeing), Dr. Abu Hasan (President and Group CEO at Prestariang), Christopher Ong (Managing Director of DHL Express), Dato’ Anthony Bujang (Petra Energy), Rubin Khoo (Editor-in-Chief at Prestige Malaysia & August Man Malaysia), Lai Tak Ming (Director of Group HR and Admin at Gamuda Bhd.), YBrs Tuan Jamiran Salam (IPGK Sarawak), Saiful Bahari Mohammed Tauhid (Bahagian Pengurusan Sekolah Harian, KPM), Luqman Hariz Ahamad Shaker (Astro Awani), Ong Jian Jie (RBC Investor & Treasury Services).

In previous years, #TFMweek participants like Lisa Surihani, Harith Iskander, Datuk Jimmy Choo, Marina Mahathir, Datuk Johan Jaafar and Datuk Seri Idris Jala also taught alongside TFM Fellows for a day. The #TFMweek experience helps our participants gain a deeper understanding of Malaysia’s education landscape and motivates them to continue championing education in their respective means. #TFMweek aims to encourage key stakeholders to play a more active role in the education ecosystem and to help them gain an insight on what it takes to build our nation through education.

Christopher Ong, Managing Director of DHL Express Malaysia and Brunei also stressed the importance of collaboration between public and private stakeholders and the role corporations can play in ending education inequity. “Education is not only limited to the ability to read and write, but also by the ability to apply relevant skills and knowledge. It is a powerful tool which can lift societies out of poverty, improve lives and build a strong society. Every child, regardless of their parents’ socio-economic status, should have access to quality education. As a partner of Teach For Malaysia, we are happy to participate in #TFMweek. Such activities strengthen our partnership as we remain committed to continue our efforts to improve education, expand educational opportunity and address the problem of educational inequity.”

Our students were inspired by the #TFMweek participants, especially when the participants shared their life’s journey with the students. The opportunity to interact with industry leaders and public figures have motivated our students to dream beyond the circumstances that surround them. Loi Wei Yuan, a 2016 TFM Fellow shared what it was like to co-teach a lesson with Luqman Hariz Ahamad Shaker, Astro Awani Anchor. “#TFMweek opens the window for my students to interact with people from other walks of lives. I hope that my students learned to appreciate and enjoy different perspectives and experiences shared by Luqman.”
