99 students from 12 schools all over Pasir Gudang came head-to-head at Project Kickstart last November, to pitch solutions\u00a0that they\u00a0hope will make a difference in their schools.<\/p>\n

\"Project<\/p>\n

Themed \u2018Kickstarting a new tomorrow\u2019, Project Kickstart is a new initiative organised by Teach For Malaysia\u2019s 2016 Fellows\u00a0in collaboration with the District Education Office (Pejabat Pendidikan Daerah\u00a0<\/em>or PPD) of\u00a0Pasir Gudang, and sponsored by Accenture. Hosted by\u00a0Universiti Teknologi MARA Johor, the 4-day camp\u00a0aimed to\u00a0develop and empower students to be leaders, as well as encourage them to take an active role as\u00a0agents of change in their schools, society and our\u00a0nation.<\/p>\n

Students\u00a0got the\u00a0chance to learn various\u00a0skills like writing proposals, pitching, designing presentations, and working as a team to\u00a0find solutions to the challenges they face. The top 10 teams that pitched\u00a0the best solutions won funding\u00a0to\u00a0kickstart their projects!<\/p>\n

\"Project<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s how they did it:<\/strong><\/p>\n

1.\u00a0Identify\u00a0a\u00a0problem they wish to address in their school
\n2. Analyse the root cause of the problem
\n3. Brainstorm ideas and solutions
\n4. Write proposal\u00a0(committee, budget, timeline, content of solution)
\n5.\u00a0Practise\u00a0pitching
\n6.\u00a0Peer review session
\n7. Submit proposal, and practise, practise, practise
\n8. Pitch idea to judges at\u00a0the final stage!<\/p>\n

20 teams pitched their ideas to a panel of\u00a0judges from\u00a0Astro, Sunway, FOLO Farms, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, \u00a0PPD Pasir Gudang, and a school principal.\u00a0A\u00a0total cash prize of RM10,000 was up for grabs \u2013 as you can guess, the competition was intense!<\/p>\n

Presenting \u2013 the top 3\u00a0teams and their ideas!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Project<\/p>\n

1st place: Green Leaves<\/strong>
\nMentor: Aitidal Shariha, 2016 Fellow at Teach For Malaysia
\nIdea: An organic farm in school that gives back!
\nProceeds from the sale of the\u00a0produce will be\u00a0used\u00a0to subsidise meals in the school canteen for underprivileged\u00a0students.
\n[Progress update] The\u00a0team has gone on a trip to FOLO Farms in Johor Bahru to learn how to start their own organic farm,\u00a0and will be partnering with FOLO to\u00a0set up their farm in school.<\/p>\n

\"Project<\/p>\n

2nd place: Brain Food<\/strong>
\nMentor: Sophie Chin, Intern at Teach For Malaysia
\nIdea: An inclusive\u00a0school library revival project!
\nGet the community together to help paint or upcycle old bookshelves, or build new ones\u00a0together. Plus, add content or books to the library created by student themselves \u2013 through a story writing competition.<\/p>\n

\"Project<\/p>\n

3rd place: B.L.I.S.S Project<\/strong>
\nMentor: Wardatulnadhirah Zainal Abidin, 2016 Fellow at Teach For Malaysia
\nIdea: A year-long leadership development programme for students!
\nOrganise\u00a0workshops to teach students how to run school events and activities, and teach them how to be proactive and raise funds on their own. At the end of the year, they\u2019ll have a school holiday camp run completely by the students themselves.<\/p>\n

The judges were so impressed by the students, they decided to chip in (with their own money!) to help fund\u00a0initiatives pitched by the other teams\u00a0\u2013 collecting a total additional amount of RM1200!<\/p>\n

Aside from helping students learn how to pitch like a boss, Project Kickstart\u00a0also helped prepare students for life \u2013 through sessions like\u00a0\u2018Know Thyself\u2019, \u2018Amazing Race\u2019 and the \u2018Circle of Life\u2019.<\/p>\n

The best part was definitely celebrating personal successes shared by the students themselves.<\/p>\n

\u201cI learned that I am a joyful person and I don\u2019t stay sad for a long time.\u201d \u2013\u00a0Amirul<\/p>\n

\u201cMy presentation skills improved after I attended this camp.\u201d \u2013\u00a0Lakshhvin<\/p>\n

We hope\u00a0this initiative will not only kickstart transformation in their schools, but in the lives of the students too.<\/p>\n
