Last week, we curated\u00a0@twt_malaysia\u2019<\/a>s\u00a0Twitter account! \u00a0Here are some\u00a0#TanyaTFM<\/a>\u00a0highlights \u2013 in case you missed it.<\/p>\n

\"#TanyaTFM\"<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve had some great discussions with the Twittersphere over the past week about the impact\u00a0teachers<\/a>\u00a0have on our nation, plus some frequently asked questions about\u00a0the\u00a0Teach For Malaysia Fellowship<\/a>. Now you\u2019re\u00a0probably wondering, what happens after the two years? Well, our work isn\u2019t limited to the classroom, and our work definitely doesn\u2019t end with the Fellowship\u00a0\u2013\u00a0it continues through our Teach For Malaysia\u00a0Alumni<\/a>!<\/p>\n

Teaching for two years in high-need classrooms give our Alumni a deep understanding of what the real challenges are, and what it will take to really empower our students and communities. It is anchored in this collective vision, that they continue to champion education and influence change in different ways.<\/p>\n

We asked Malaysia what\u00a0they felt were the most important areas to focus on in education:<\/p>\n

\"Twitter<\/a><\/p>\n

Some\u00a0felt that the\u00a0format and structure of education\u00a0need to evolve, whereas others felt that education should be led by educators themselves.\"#TanyaTFM<\/a>\"5<\/a><\/p>\n

We agree that educators need to be empowered to lead education transformation! We\u2019ve seen this happening in various\u00a0ways,\u00a0like\u00a0this\u00a0school transformation programme<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0that aims to improve students\u2019 learning outcomes by empowering teachers to lead and drive transformation in their respective schools\u00a0(the majority of the students in these schools are from poor families or\u00a0communities).<\/p>\n

\"Project<\/a><\/p>\n

The programme was co-founded by Teach For Malaysia Alumni, and\u00a0is being\u00a0implemented in five\u00a0schools across Penang and Perak,\u00a0in collaboration with different education organisations.<\/p>\n

Others suggested\u00a0that it was better to start with the basics, like improving the facilities and equipment in our schools. In fact,\u00a0an online crowdfunding platform\u00a0called\u00a0100% Project<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0does just that! It\u00a0helps teachers raise money\u00a0for sports kits, classroom aids, digital maker kits, and much more \u2013\u00a0empowering teachers to provide the best learning experience for their students. Fun fact, it was also co-founded by Teach For Malaysia Alumni!\"18<\/a>\"19<\/a><\/p>\n

Future-ready skills like entrepreneurship and programming were also called out as much-needed innovations in education. (Check out these social enterprises\u00a0to watch in the maker education universe \u2013\u00a0Arus<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0dan\u00a0Chumbaka<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 also proudly run by Teach For Malaysia Alumni.)\"29<\/a>\"30<\/a><\/p>\n

Of course, what tops the list\u00a0as one of the most important areas to focus on in education, is literacy \u2013 especially, English.\"Twitter<\/a>\"6<\/a>\"11<\/a>We particularly like this idea from @iqrarzahin to use a buddy system to help students help each other. You\u2019ll be pleased to know that Teach For Malaysia Alumni started a literacy initiative\u00a0called\u00a0MY Readers<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0that uses the buddy system\u00a0\u2013\u00a0and pretty successfully too! After 24 weeks in the programme, students gained as much as 7 years in reading growth.<\/p>\n

\"Twitter<\/a>We\u2019d like to wrap things up on a pretty exciting note \u2013 that education should empower students to lead change too.\u00a0Project ID<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is a great example of how leadership can be contagious; some of the students who attended programmes run by Teach For Malaysia Alumni have even started their own initiatives that are student-led!<\/p>\n
